Hello everyone and welcome to instant biology by Dr. Neelav.
Today we are going to talk about growth rate vs specific growth rate in our bioprocess engineering lecture series.
It is a very confusing topic.
Children are often confused about the growth rate.
What is the specific growth rate?
So this lecture is targeted at
how to differentiate
growth rate and specific growth rate.
First, let's try to understand why we need to know or understand the growth rate.
Whenever we talk about the production of biomass or how much biomass is being produced,
how long, we use these two parameters.
Let's understand how it works.
If we take an organism
Let's take an organism X
We are taking an organism X
Now this organism
is growing
We have provided it
proper nutrients, proper medium
So it is growing
So if
suppose this X organism
has 5 grams
of cells
or for better calculation we can say that it has 10 gm cells
we took 10 gm cells and provided them nutrients and let them grow
and we are observing and seeing that within 5 minutes this biomass will double
means first 10gm and now 20gm
first 10gm and now 20gm
and then we saw that this 20gm
this 20gm
this in next 5 minutes
again doubled
ok
initially we took 10gm which doubled after 5 minutes
equal to 20gm
and after that this 20gm
in next 5 minutes it also doubled
40 grams
Now you must be thinking what is new in this.
If you see here, there is a difference of 10 grams.
That means 10 grams of extra growth.
Now see here, 20 to 40 grams.
That means 20 grams of extra growth.
How can this be represented or how can this be shown?
The best way to show this is growth rate.
So how will the growth rate be?
So, we have to write the final growth rate, which is the final growth rate minus initial growth rate, upon the time taken for the growth.
So, if we consider this as the first case and this as the second case,
and if we start calculating the growth rate, then what will be the growth rate of the first case?
