Video Transcript
Hello everyone and welcome to instant biology by Dr. Neelav.
The topic we are going to talk about today is bioprocess engineering and this is the third lecture in the series of bioprocess engineering.
This lecture is very important for all the GATE exams.
In the previous lecture, that is, in Bioprocess Engineering Part 2, we talked about material balance.
And we saw that...
I have already discussed about mass balance.
We have already discussed about the input, output and loss of mass.
Input is equal to output plus loss.
and in different instances
or in different situations
we can modify this equation
and get the mass balance equation.
Today we are going to discuss
the topic of elemental balance.
So first let us see what is elemental balance
and what is it?
After that, we will see
how to solve the questions related to it.
This question is from the Pathfinder book.
But how to solve it, how to understand it easily,
I will tell you here.
Let's see what is elemental balance?
From the name itself, we can understand that
elemental balance means
if we have elements like carbon, nitrogen and oxygen
These elements are shown in the form of the substrate and the product.
The product is not the same as the substrate.
The same compound is found in the product form.
This is not the case.
So, the element can be like this.
It is possible or it happens that you give the element in one form in the reaction
and finally you see it in another form in the product.
Like, if we see the equation we have given here,
So, in that, if we are giving normal oxygen here, right?
Oxygen is somewhere in this substrate.
See, oxygen is given somewhere.
Oxygen is given only in one place here.
Okay.
So, now when this oxygen is coming in the product, then see,
one is coming in the form of biomass here.
And second,
in this, oxygen is coming in the form of carbon dioxide.
And in this, oxygen is coming in the form of water.
So, when we do balance,
when we do elemental balance,
we have to keep in mind that
we don't have to get all the elements in the same form
we don't have to get all the elements in the same form
but the elements will be conserved
but the elements will be conserved
