Rimworld : Kitchen, Food, Nutrition, Poisoning and Cooking: Tutorial Nuggets
A relatively quick guide tutorial on food, the topic is unfortunately a bit large when you start digging into it. The main take always are, fine meals are a solid choice, lavish meals are a mood booster. Nutrient paste is cheap risk free just hurts your moral. Cook with a dirt floor early on and you drastically lower your risk of food poisoning and have a cook with level 8 cooking.

And we're back with a quick tutorial on food and food poisoning in Rimworld.
Now let's immediately get this out of the way with, to prevent food poisoning as simply as possible,
use a dirt floor early on. A dirt floor is your best bet. I know it sounds crazy but it really is
the safest option. You'll have a tenderness there at the bottom of minus one which indicates dirty
but minus one is actually perfectly fine for cooking food with no chance of additional food
poisoning. If you go below minus one then yes it does get worse so if you go to minus 1.1 you're
actually going to start increasing your chances of getting food poisoning.
But on a dirt floor that's really hard.
The only way you can do that is if you drag blood in there.
This is why everyone tells you put your slaughtering area outside of the kitchen.
Down here we have two pawns ready to butcher up some
animals, they'll grab them down here and slaughter them up on these tables. As they do, you see
the blood coming off them. Well, room here is currently at very dirty, minus 1.5. Namely
because of all of the nasty, nasty meat and stuff that got left about the place, and all
of the blood. You can see there the minus 10 under that, that's blood, that's minus
10 over there, that's also blood, that's also adding to the filter rating, which is why
this entire place now is very dirty. If you also had your stove in here, you're going
to be getting a lot of food poisoning. Quick note while we're here, if you use a butcher's
spot as opposed to a butcher's table, you will get less meat and less leather out of
every animal you butcher so it's usually a good idea to get up to a butchers table as
quickly as possible.
Now with that out of the way, let's just have a quick go over dirt.
The reason you want to hold off on tiling an area is because of how the dirt mechanics
work.
You'll see here we have this perfectly pristine room.
The only thing about it is we've got one dirt tile here in the corner.
The dirt level in here has been averaged out to 0.02 so it's actually quite clean in comparison.
But if we have a barkley here walk around the place, we'll just have them run around
in circles for a bit.
This might take a moment. Oh, there we go. Dirt, right there.
And the reason for that dirt is because they were standing on dirt.
Think of it as the soles of their shoes have collected dirt while they were walking on it
and at some point during their travels they're going to drop that dirt off.
But the thing is, once they've done it once, they shouldn't drop off any more dirt anymore.
So what'll happen at the start of the game is if you just put a regular floor, or a nice floor inside your kitchen
everyone who walks in there has a percentage chance of dropping dirt on the floor.
And every time they go in and out, they're gonna have another chance of dropping more dirt.
As well as that dirt can be carried around on the soles of the feet
So someone who has dropped off their dirt already can walk across dirt, pick it up on the soles of their feet and drag it
Around to the next location. The same with blood, gore, insect stuff, all sorts of things. They can all be left behind
All right, there we go
We have two patches of dirt right left on the floor. That one here
You can actually see it down in the bottom right, it'll tell you that's dirt by one. Dirt can stack up to four
That's why you never put floors in here
Just not until you can floor your whole base. Once you can floor your whole base
Then you floor your kitchens and you can floor them with the very nice sterile towel
Sterile tile is a bit unique in that it gives a sort of a buffer for you.
For example, this is now 0.36 in terms of cleanliness.
The reason being the sterile tiles give you a bonus to cleanliness,
meaning it takes longer before you can overcome the natural cleanliness of the tiles,
