Over 40,000 companies apply to be on Shark Tank every year, and 250 of those get to actually
0:07
pitch the sharks.
0:08
Since the show's inception back in 2009, the sharks have invested $207 million into businesses.
0:16
With numbers like that, the sharks are bound to make a handful of bad investments.
0:20
In this video, we'll be taking a look at two of the worst investments the sharks have
0:24
made to date, starting out with Toy Garou.
0:27
Toi Garou, or with some we're calling the Netflix for a Toys, was a fairly interesting
0:33
twist on a fast growing subscription industry back in 2011.
0:37
Essentially, people would sign up for a toy box subscription where they would receive
0:41
a certain amount of toys they could use for 30 days.
0:45
At the end of the month, the families had the ability to either buy those toys for
0:48
good or ship them back and receive a new toy box.
0:51
You can tell watching this episode the idea peaked the interest of all the sharks.
0:57
The average family spends anywhere between 12 and $1,400 each year.
1:01
And tell me again the cost per toy box that you ship was $200 did you say?
1:06
And what's your cost on the toys that you're shipping?
1:08
On the box of toys it's going to be anywhere between $50 to $85.90.
1:13
Two and a half months you break even and right.
1:15
That's exactly right.
1:16
A deal with struck where Mark and Kevin invested $200,000 for 35% of the business.
1:23
But that money was gone quick.
1:26
Toy Garou had two massive issues, inventory and logistical cost.
1:30
The business begins to grow.
1:32
Does it suck up a ton of cash?
1:35
Niki, for every million dollars of sales, how much do I have to put in to buy inventory
1:39
of toys?
1:40
Just in toys.
1:41
Just in toys, $64,000.
1:43
That's going to cover a year of toys.
1:45
Okay, Nikki, I've heard enough.
1:46
They have very high costs on toys
1:48
because they weren't buying one toy at scale.
1:52
They were buying tons of different toys at low quantity.
1:56
Also, because toys are different shapes and sizes,
1:59
shipping costs were a nightmare to fine-tune.
2:02
Ironically enough, the founder of Toy Guru
2:04
said appearing on Shark Tank
2:06
may have been the worst thing for them.
2:08
They had a massive uptick in subscriptions after the show.
2:12
No grip on the logistics or inventory costs,
2:14
and just like that, they filed for bankruptcy a year later.
2:19
The second company we're taking a look at is Breath Amateur.
2:23
This today will probably go down as the worst investment since the TV shows inception,
2:28
because all sharks were involved.
2:31
Essentially, Breath Amateur allows you to plug in a breathalyzer directly to your phone,
2:36
allowing you to check your BAC level at any time.
2:39
Honestly, the idea sounds pretty strong, and it seems like a product that would have
2:43
benefited a lot of people and the sharks have the same mindset of first glance as well.
2:48
Brothometer, the world's first smartphone breathalyzer.
2:52
It's so small it can fit in your pocket.
