over billions of years the forces of the
elements have shaped our planet by fire
water and wind Nature has written its
own
history shaping Landscapes and bringing
forth the wonders of our
Earth making it the home of
mankind as far as We Know
the only place where we can
live yet we have subdued nature to a
large extent by harnessing its forces
and redesigning it according to our own
ideas human activities often associated
with energy and agriculture have changed
and are changing the Earth's composition
we have erected Splendid monuments and
created prosperity for many over
thousands of years our impact has been
growing
steadily that's a 12,000 year period of
of stability which we call the holine
and when we see uh key parameters like
temperature like Extinction rates and so
on moving way outside of the bounds of
the Holocene we're in something new and
of course we've called that the
anthropos
[Music]
the traces of our work can be seen in
the farthest corners of the
world we transform forests into arable
land
the technosphere the sum of all man-made
things spreads further and
further mega cities grow at breathtaking
speed our era never stands
still the world's population is
constantly growing yet Earth does
not by now we use 2/3 of the surface of
the Earth for human habitations for
traffic for
agriculture which means that we have
become the dominant
Factor since the middle of the 20th
century we have filled our planet with
the products of our daily life concrete
aluminium plastic and created a kind of
technosphere we're talking about an
average weight of 50 kilg per square
meter
