The History of Pinball Part 2: The Rise of the Solid-States
In this video, we go through pinball's history from where we left off in the late 70's through the rapid advancement in the 80's. In this time, we see the shift from Electromechanical pinball machines (EM's) to the use of Solid-State (SS's)
Special video credits go to the following. If you wanna see more detailed videos/gameplay for individual machines, I highly recommend checking these guys out

whoa whoa whoa
wait a minute
this is part two of the pinball history
don't watch this one until you've seen
part one for that juicy juicy context
anyway let's just get right into it
we're just gonna get right back where we
left off last time with those big
changes i was talking about pinball was
about to go through what is probably the
most important metamorphosis ever move
over butterfly that shift was the change
from electromechanical pinball machines
to the sleek new solid-state technology
this new solid-state technology or ss as
we'll be referring to them from now on
were different in that everything was
controlled by a series of microchips
instead of ems which were controlled by
reacting to individual bells and
whistles this allowed ss's to be way
more sophisticated and complicated as
they could do more and keep track of
what's going on
nobody knows for certain what the first
ss pinball machine was it could have
been micro games spirit of 76 or it
could have been allied leisure's
dinomite but it doesn't matter because
neither of them sold very well
more importantly our main characters
williams and bali had been quietly
working on their own ss technology
behind the scenes meanwhile gottlieb
would dig their heels in the ground and
refuse to move on to the new tech
thinking we don't gotta change we've
been doing the same thing for forever
and everyone loves it this new just a
fad people will get over it
this was a mistake the company would
never recover from
there was probably a big push in the
industry to move to ss because the new
video arcade games very suddenly and
very rudely upended the pinball scene
nobody wanted to play pinball not when
donkey kong was around atari's founder
nolan bushnell said himself that he
planned to replace the stinky old
