I think there was an avalanche
In this episode I'm riding through the Himalayan mountains
from winter to summer in one day
descending close to the disputed Magma Hong line
and reaching China's mysterious, remotest and most isolated city
Madoc
Good morning everyone.
Today I am in Bomi County in Tibet.
Now it's 8.30 in the morning and my today's destination
is Mottuo, the least connected city in China.
For many, many years, Mottuo is only accessible half a year every year
because in winter when the snow gets too big, it buries the road
and making the whole city unaccessible.
And now it's still difficult to get there
because there is only one road from Bomi to Mottuo, and this is the only way.
There used to be two roads. The other way is called Paimo Gonglu,
So connecting Paizheng and Mottuo, but two years ago there was a huge avalanche
so up till now that road is still under construction.
And from Bumi to Mottuo, there is a policy called Shuang Jing Dan Chu.
So on a date, which is the odd number, we can drive in and on a date
which is a signal number, we can drive out. So it's only one-way traffic.
Okay, now this is very important. So not everyone can go to Muotuo. Before going there, you
you need this, a tōngxīngzhèng, a permission to go to some remote area in China and you
have to apply for it before coming here.
My ride started from Bómi, a beautiful city nestled in a dense green forest and surrounded
by snow mountains.
The Pálǎngcāngbó flows through it and the morning air is moist and fresh.
From Bomi to Motu it's about 120 km ride and it will take me about 3 or 4 hours.
And the highest elevation is around 5000 m whereas the lowest point is less than 1000 m.
So the climbing is going to be very vertical.
by the hotel manager. It's very hot and humid in Motto. So today I'll be riding
from winter to summer. Wow there is so much snow. I think there was an avalanche.
Look at the trees.
雪崩路難,景深難行。
So this is a road destroyed by the avalanche.
Wow this is difficult. It's all big stone.
Hello! Hello!
I've got friends.
Do you want to take a plane to Shanghai?
What?
Do you want to take a plane to Shanghai?
A little bit. Just a little bit.
Yes.
The road to Medok used to be a deadly road.
Many sections have been repeatedly destroyed by the avalanche and frequent landslide during the rainy season.
The road was completed only in 2013, 52 years after the project started.
Half an hour later, I reached the Galongna Tunnel and there was a long queue.
That's the tunnel.
It's still under construction.
We have to wait another 20 minutes.
