From 1618 to 1848, the great, the Thirty Years' War was raging. It put cities and villages in ashes,
forests, fields and convictions. It had begun as a struggle of conscience. Reformation against
Catholicism, constant freedom against imperialism. Soon no one knew what it was about and the
war was raging to eat. The proud armies under Gustav Adolf, Tilli, Wallenstein were
Beaten, hanged, starved, frozen, tortured to death,
trapped in the test.
No side had the strength to win.
When the war was finally over, half of Germany was depopulated.
Nothing meaningful was left behind.
Only broken people, a desolate earth, a deified world.
My origin and my upbringing were full of riddles.
If someone had asked me how old I was, I would have said,
I was just pulling the ax.
Because when I came to this world, no one had ever told me that.
I knew my boy, as in the local dialect the father is called,
my mother and the rest of the family.
Otherwise, no soul.
I honestly thought we were all alone in the world.
And that this charming area was called the Spessart,
I only learned much later.
I'm going to get a little bit of a ride.
Hey, Bob!
Don't leave the fence so far from the other side.
So that the wolf doesn't come and hurt you.
Hey, tell me, Gnano, what does the wolf look like?
I've never seen a wolf before.
Oh, you rough donkey's head.
I'm surprised what will become of you.
You're a big guy and you don't know what a four-legged beast the wolf is.
Meanwhile, you're coming right after the two-legged one.
What's the name of that?
Stop the nonsense. It's time to go home.
My old boy was right.
I didn't know God or people, neither good nor evil.
I grew up in a paradise of innocence as a pure fool.
In short, just like the cattle.
Oh, the noble life I led back then.
I lacked nothing, and I was fine.
Stop it!
It means,
in Würzburg, soldiers were killed.
Jesus Maria and Joseph!
Swede!
Soldiers?
What's that?
Oh my!
It's a war, they say.
For years now.
War? What's war?
It's when you betray yourself.
