China is experiencing a youth unemployment crisis.
I desperately want to find a job because I need a house.
Millions of university graduates are unable to find jobs and meet their families' expectations.
As the first generation of college students, I hope to make a lot of money
and help my family and myself to live a better life.
Those with informal work are struggling too.
This job is a job that requires time.
The longer you work, the more you earn.
In 2023, youth unemployment hit a record high
amid an ongoing economic slowdown.
101East follows young job seekers
as they navigate China's challenging labour market.
Beijing's skyscrapers represent the Chinese dream, President Xi Jinping's promise of prosperity
for all and leadership on the world stage.
But in reality, China's economy is struggling with a property crisis, national debt and
youth unemployment.
Around one in six young people living in cities can't find work.
Xi Jinping has urged young people to eat bitterness, a Chinese phrase that means to endure hardship
without complaining.
But young people in China are increasingly disillusioned. Criticism of Beijing's leadership
leadership is not tolerated and journalists are censored. We contact 300 unemployed young
people but only three are prepared to speak on camera.
Tianjin has a leisurely start to the day in the central Chinese city of Zhengzhou. Like
Like many young Chinese people, the 24-year-old is finding the job market sluggish.

and that would be a decent job.
But my job at the time
didn't meet my expectations,
so I didn't want to find a job.
Like many young people here,
a year after graduating,
Dan Qing hasn't found a suitable job.
Priced out of Beijing,
he's moved back to his home province of Henan in central China.
