Hello, this week the spotlight has returned to Ukraine after Kiev orchestrated an audacious
0:06
series of drone attacks deep inside Russia. They also covertly targeted the Kursh bridge in Crimea.
0:14
We then had that underwhelming second round of talks in Istanbul and another call between Trump
0:21
and Putin. We'll be answering all your questions today with our expert panel.
0:27
I'm Vitaly Shavchenko.
0:29
And I'm Lisa Doucette in the Ukrainecast studio.
0:32
And I'm Paul Adams in Kiev.
0:34
And I'm Lucy Hawkins. Welcome to Ukrainecast.
0:38
Ukrainecast from BBC News.
0:47
Well, let's start with that attack that stunned the world, not only stunned the world, impressed
0:52
the world as well.
0:53
Operation Spider Web.
0:54
We'll talk about the implications in a minute.
0:56
But before the world found out that that attack had taken place, we had a question in all
1:01
the way from New Zealand from Sharon, who said, one topic I would like to know more
1:05
about is Ukrainian capabilities to defensively strike inside Russia.
1:10
Zelensky has repeatedly said that the war should be felt where it came from.
1:14
There are rarely reports in the mainstream media about Ukrainian defensive actions on
1:19
Russian territory.
1:20
Now, Sharon, for all the details and all of you on how Spider Web was carried out, do
1:25
make sure you go to the UkraineCast episode that we did on Tuesday.
1:29
It's on our feed.
1:30
But let's talk more about Spider Web, though, now that we're a few days on, and what it
1:35
tells us about Ukraine's tactics inside Russia going forward.
1:40
Paul, do you think we've got more to come?
1:43
I think we do.
1:44
In fact, President Zelensky has hinted as much. He talked about a series of operations.
1:50
A few days ago, all the talk was of Russia's anticipated summer offensive, an offensive
1:57
which actually kind of is under way in certain areas, if you look at what's going on close
2:01
to Sumy in the northeast of the country.
2:03
But now, since the weekend, it's all been about what Ukraine is up to, with Operation
2:09
Spider's Web, with the attack on the Kerch Bridge, with another thing that went largely
2:14
unreported, which was a Ukrainian hack of the computer systems of the Tupolev aircraft
2:21
manufacturer.
2:22
But, apparently, they made off with a huge amount of data.
2:24
So, Ukraine is really keen to show that it is creative, that it has regained the momentum.
2:32
And, you know, quite apart from the sheer kind of military physical impact of all of
2:39
this, and, you know, let's not kind of beat about the bush, the attack on those air bases
2:44
across Russia was a truly, truly spectacular operation, which will go down in the annals
2:52
of modern military history and will probably be the subject of novels and movies in the
2:56
future.
2:57
It is just gobsmacking in its audacity.
2:59
It's right up there with the Israeli use of exploding pages to kill members of Hezbollah
3:05
last year, a really extraordinary operation.
3:08
But quite apart from the kind of military purpose of it all, if you think back to whenever
3:14
it was, February, when President Zelensky went and visited Donald Trump in that the
3:19
Oval Office, and they had that dreadful encounter.
3:21
And one of Donald Trump's lines then was, you have got no cards.
3:25
Well, if you look at the memes that have exploded onto social media here in Ukraine since the
3:32
weekend, that subject keeps coming back.
