Welcome along to another Mindburner video. Today's topic is a Niagara Tea, a fantastic
machine from the mid 80s. I've had this for quite some time and I really enjoy using the
machine, it's a fantastic product. So I'm doing this little piece of camera outside
because it's just a lovely winter's day in Belfast here with the snow which you don't
it very often. But enough of that, let's go into the studio and start looking at the machine.
Some time ago I did a short video on my Niagara Tea tape recorder. Although basic and low quality,
the video did seem to spark some interest so I decided to revisit this marvellous tape machine.
In 1951 Stefan Kuldelsky
developed a miniature, ultra-high quality audio recorder, the NIGRA 1.
Around five years later, the NIGRA 2 was born.
The NIGRA simply means, will record in the Polish language.
In 1971, the NIGRA SN was first developed.
It is a small, miniature reel-to-reel recorder,
which featured in spy films and quickly became an iconic recording machine.
NIGRA machines became sought after and quickly gained a hold in film and television
and became a workhorse in many edit and post-production suites.
Nagra have different divisions, some specialising in very high-end audio hi-fi.
No matter what the product, Nagra spells quality, design, build quality and workmanship second to none.
The Nagra T was first developed in 1981 as a stereo mastering machine for audio.
In 1984, an SMPTE equipped version was introduced for film and television.
This had an extra track of timecode.
which enables synchronization to film.
This was a very popular product for Niagara,
and many were sold to movie studios and TV stations.
The machine could be customized
with many different options and features,
and also be set up for individual tape types.
This machine is arguably one of the best
tape machines in the world.
A fabulous feature of the Niagara Tape
is the ability just to get inside
to see the inner workings, at least the motors and that. All you do is release two tabs,
there's one there and one has already been released, and then lift it up and there's
a nice little notched strip here and an arm which supports it. It's a bit like lifting
the bonnet of your car but it's really nicely done and there's a nice cross member here
to support the car.
frame. What we have are four large motors, two for the tape rails and two for the
tape drive. In the center is the speed stabilizer which controls the
relationship of the motors and it's beautiful wiring coming away from that
into the PCBs. This is a control I think for changing the speed of the tape. Below
this we have the tensiometers and what their job is to ensure that the tape
tension is perfect at all times so they send back signals to the CPU which can
then adjust the motors to compensate. These have been factory set and they
shouldn't be changed unless there's a good reason to. The service manual goes
through in detail how this is done but it definitely shouldn't be attempted by
someone who really has no knowledge of this, i.e. me, so I leave these things well
alone. But it's beautifully made inside and it is like a Swiss watch if anything.
So this is one of the four motor assemblies that are in the machine.
They have a cover. The cover just comes off.
