On July 4, 1980, the United States completed 204 years of independence.
Meanwhile, the people of the village of Michael Levine, was encumbered in Buenos Aires,
to meet with drug trafficker Hugo Hurtado Candia.
They were there to talk about a deal, but Hurtado mentioned that Roberto Suarez Gomez,
do you remember him, the Bolivian cocaine king?
Well, he was planning a coup d'etat.
Hurtado mentioned that the change was coming,
and that he was in a hurry to get his cocaine out of Bolivia and take it to Buenos Aires before.
He was happy with his current bribes to police and military,
and did not know if the new regime was going to charge him more.
Hurtado also mentioned that his niece, Sonia Atala, would have considerable power under
a new government.
Levine made him keep talking and Hurtado kept confessing things.
He lamented the loss of 158 kilos of cocaine in a plane that crashed in Venezuela.
That plane, according to Hurtado, took off from Atala's ranch.
By the way, the only photos of Sonia Atala are like this with a blurred face because
is currently under witness protection. But that's a story for later.
So, let's go back to that meeting in July 1980. Hurtado is confessing, with names,
dates, and places, key details that link him and Sonia Atala to the corporation of
Roberto Suárez Gómez. He is also confessing that there is a coup in preparation against
a friendly government, a government so friendly that it lets agents of the DEA operate in
their country, and says that this is planned for some time in the next month, so there
is still time to act and stop it. Meanwhile, with a hidden microphone in his suit, Michael
Levine is trying to keep calm and not show his emotion. He knows about that plane because
the DEA found it in Venezuela, with the same amount of cocaine that Hurtado confessed.
That evidence, plus the recording, would be enough to arrest Hurtado, Atala, and even
Suárez Gómez, and end the corporation, and the majority of the drug trafficker in Bolivia.
After leaving the meeting, Levine went to speak with his local contact, a member of
the Argentine secret police.
This secret police disappeared thousands of people during the military meeting.
In his book, Levine recalls the character of that police officer, although for legal reasons he had to refer to him with a synonym, Mario.
Sometimes you have to change the names, not to protect the innocent, but the guilty.
He says,
For Mario, murder had become an addiction, a necessity, even an aphrodisiac.
Once, at an event at the US embassy, I heard him half drunk tell other Argentine police officers,
Nothing excites me more than killing. Immediately after killing, I have to fuck. I'm desperate
to fuck." When the Argentines heard the recording, they
were not enthusiastic. They were worried. Levine remembers that Mario told him,
The same people he names as drug traffickers are the people we are helping to free
Bolivia from leftists. Although Levine did not have the necessary
necessary security authorization to know it, his investigation of Roberto Suárez Gómez
had just failed, directly against Plan Condor.
Argentina was one of the first countries to join the Plan Condor of the CIA.
Plan Condor is a topic too broad to explain well in this video, but to
summarize, it was an anti-leftist terrorism campaign, coordinated by the CIA, in all
the military dictatorships of the South Cone.
