The 'solenoid Engraver' Proof of concept Solenoid Power graver
Calling all electronic/adunio peeps,to jump in with projects that would create the same effect, more efficiently. I'm sure the overheating is an easy fix,for a clever person.like yourselves? PM or leave a comment. Engraved coins for Circuit boards,if you like :)
No time ,or patience,to spend on this,so just letting it out there for others to complete.
It would be more cost effective,to work on this rather than making a Car pump version,as the cost is so low,and the fact that there is no air, makes it possible to make the handpiece from anything, wood, plastic or any type of metal.
This solenoid was 12v 0.6 amps, have orredred a 6amp version,so maybe that will solve the heating problem, but think that is really just a matter of getting the pulse circuit to switch off and on more efficiently .

Hi guys
I'm just gonna let this out here
I'm not gonna mess around researching this much further unless I get a little bit of help because but it does work
so right what consists of I've just using a
Cheap graver. I've got just this kind of I can adjust it this end with this. So it's just a bit of Meccano
I've super glued I've upgrade from sellotape to super glue and a bit of copper wire. So
it consists of, I'll put links to everything,
it's a relatively cheap solenoid,
about six pounds, but you can get a similar looking solenoid
for 30, 40 pounds, so I don't know
the difference in quality, but I'm sure there is, but this is working apart from
it's getting a bit hot, but we'll
discuss that in a minute.
So, the reason why this is handy, so you've got this
screw fixed here so a finished article will need two adjustments using this
solenoid so you need an adjustment that winds the graver end in and out
and what that does it creates a larger distance from the end of the piston so
the analogy is you've got a hammer and you're tapping lightly or you've got a
up and you're swinging it more so that will create a greater hit and so you
just adjust it there and the adjustment on this end is this spring within the
solenoid this is called a push type so I'm not sure if you Google if you go on
eBay and you're looking for push types they're not always the same but you'll
get an idea with the way this looks so it's got a piston there it's got the
coiled air inside this little silver thing or it's built inside is a spring.
So the way it works is the unit is activated, it shoots forward,
I'll be the electric, right so it shoots forward then the electrics turned
off and then this spring that's inside it returns it. So the purpose of this
spring which could be a bit lighter but just something out of a pen, so the idea
would be if you don't have the spring on there it still comes on but it has to
overcome the force of the spring so if you push it slightly forward with
another spring you kind of equalize in that pressure so it will start more
gently you've also got a shock absorber on the return because you don't
want it slamming otherwise it slams against the back of that. Right so that's
Basically the adjustment at the back and the adjustment at the front and you will screw that in and out on your handpiece
And you screw that on your handpiece
the thing that creates the pulse is a little 12 volt LED flasher unit and
They are slightly different you can buy these you can buy ten of these for three quid less than three quid
So but they're not the greatest thing
But they seem to be working
Okay, I did have one that works better kind of they're like a random pulse
So let me I won't go too mad because it does overheat the thing, but you can change the mode
So imagine that was a flashing light
So you don't want any of them they're interesting but
You want the fast one and the fast one so this button here does speed
But don't do it on any other speed
other than the
Fast one yet on this thing so that that that speed might be
Might be useful for stippling, but I wouldn't use that speed, but I would use the next speed which is this
No, not that
that one
